Thoughts about what to do when stopped by a cop.

• Cops live with the understanding that someone may try to kill them; paranoia is reality and a necessity
• All cops, dirty or clean, live with this and watch out for this: you don not want to trigger that
• The way cops live with this is by being in control of all their interactions, so:
• You do not want to surprise them, challenge them, question them.  You do what they tell you, exactly as they tell you with nothing added or subtracted.  So you should be calm, quiet, composed and prepared to give them what they ask for
  
• When a cop pulls you over, right away, before the cop gets out and walks up to your car
  
• get your license and registration from the glovebox and put it on the dashboard in front of the steering wheel
• put your wallet with your license along side
• If there something simple and small you feel you should hide and can do it simply and quickly, do it and then put it out of your mind
• put both hands on the steering wheel
• Now, when the cop to your window, he can:
• see your hands; they are not holding gun and will not do something sudden and surprise him
• similarly, when he asks for papers, they are right there where he can see them....you don't have to reach somewhere for them, which he might interpret as reaching for a weapon.
  
• Also: they may ask you "if you would  do [something], or if you wouldn't mind if they did [something}.  If it's optional, it's probably best NOT to do it.  Above all, do not volunteer anything.
  
• There is a wealth of legal precedent about what cops can and cannot do and what is legally permissible....and they know EXACTLY how to weasel with that (in seeming friendliness) that will strip you of your rights and protections.
